Support for Family Caregivers: Medicare's New Training Initiative

November 1st, 2026
Being a caregiver for a loved one can be both rewarding and overwhelming. Many individuals step into this role without any formal training, leading to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. For example, Alice Thomas, who cared for her father with dementia, faced challenges in understanding how to provide proper care and manage difficult situations.

In response to the needs of family caregivers, Medicare introduced a new training benefit in 2024 aimed at helping those who provide care for their loved ones. This initiative is designed to equip caregivers with valuable skills, such as safe patient handling, medication management, and effective communication techniques.

Unfortunately, many caregivers remain unaware of these available training benefits. Experts suggest that the lack of promotion and visibility of these programs contributes to this issue, leaving caregivers to navigate their responsibilities largely on their own. Rita Choula from the AARP Public Policy Institute emphasizes the importance of supporting caregivers who are often expected to perform tasks traditionally handled by medical professionals.

State programs also play a crucial role in caregiver support. For instance, Minnesota has developed a unique model that connects caregivers with certified consultants who provide ongoing, personalized training and guidance. This approach has proven to be effective, as it focuses on the specific challenges caregivers face, offering hands-on assistance and emotional support.

In Wisconsin, similar initiatives are emerging, where caregiver support coordinators work directly with families to create tailored plans that address their unique needs. These programs aim to alleviate the overwhelming pressure many caregivers experience.

As more caregivers seek help, it’s essential to spread awareness about available resources. Programs like the In-Home Supportive Services and various state-supported training initiatives can offer necessary tools and training to enhance the caregiving experience. If you or someone you know is a caregiver, consider discussing these options with a healthcare provider or looking into local resources.
