New York Declares Statewide Emergency Amid Measles Outbreak

October 7th, 2026
New York is responding to a notable rise in measles cases by declaring a statewide disaster emergency. This decision marks the first such declaration in the U.S. since a surge in cases began in 2025. Governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized the importance of addressing this public health issue as cases continue to increase. As of early October, the state has reported a total of 108 measles cases this year, with a significant spike noticed since mid-July. These cases are particularly concentrated in rural communities, where vaccination rates have been lower. In response, the state is expanding the number of health professionals authorized to administer the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, aiming to improve immunization coverage.Local health departments have been proactive, administering over 1,000 MMR doses in rural areas since July. The emergency declaration also includes measures to streamline vaccination reporting, ensuring that all MMR vaccinations are logged within 72 hours to enhance monitoring efforts. While measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, recent years have seen a worrying resurgence, with this year reportedly being the worst since 1991. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has indicated nearly 3,900 cases nationwide, underscoring the gravity of the situation. This outbreak is part of a larger trend, with neighboring states experiencing their struggles, including Pennsylvania, which has reported over 1,000 cases. The current emergency measures in New York are set to remain in effect until early November, as health officials work diligently to stem the tide of this preventable disease.
