Health Officials Investigate Alfalfa Sprout-Related Food Poisoning Across 15 States

August 22nd, 2026
Recently, health officials in the U.S. have identified a food-poisoning outbreak associated with alfalfa sprouts, which has impacted individuals in 15 states. This situation has prompted a thorough investigation, as officials work to understand the extent of the outbreak and its causes.

As of now, more than three dozen cases have been documented in states like Minnesota and Wisconsin, with national reports indicating a total of 55 cases. Among these, four individuals have required hospitalization. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively monitoring the situation.

Interviews conducted with affected individuals reveal that a significant number, 26 out of 34, consumed alfalfa sprouts prior to falling ill. This outbreak is particularly notable because it involves multiple germs, including salmonella and various strains of E. coli, which can lead to serious health issues.

Symptoms of these infections can vary, with salmonella typically causing diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, while E. coli infections may result in stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea. In some cases, these infections can lead to more severe complications, underscoring the importance of addressing the outbreak promptly.

The alfalfa sprouts in question have been linked to Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota-based grower. These sprouts are distributed under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to both grocery stores and restaurants. While a recall has not yet been issued, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is closely monitoring the situation.

In the past, the FDA has raised concerns about Everything Sprouts, highlighting issues that were identified during inspections. As the investigation unfolds, it is essential for anyone who may have consumed these sprouts to stay informed and consult with healthcare professionals if they experience any symptoms.
