Introducing a Breakthrough Solution for Menopausal Hot Flashes: FDA Approves a New Drug

May 16th, 2023
The US Food and Drug Administration has recently given its stamp of approval to an innovative drug designed specifically to address the discomfort caused by menopausal hot flashes and night sweats.Meet Veozah, also known as fezolinetant, developed by Astellas Pharma. This groundbreaking medication is the first neurokinin 3 (NK3) antagonist to be approved by the FDA. By blocking certain receptors in the brain that play a role in regulating body temperature, Veozah offers an alternative approach to managing hot flashes without relying on traditional hormone replacement therapies.
Hot flashes can be a significant physical burden for women going through menopause and can have a considerable impact on their overall quality of life. That's why the approval of this new molecule is such a significant milestone. Dr. Janet Maynard, the director of the FDA's Office of Rare Diseases, Pediatrics, Urologic and Reproductive Medicine in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, stated, "The introduction of a new molecule to treat moderate to severe menopausal hot flashes will provide an additional safe and effective treatment option for women."
During menopause, which typically begins in a woman's mid- to late 40s, the body produces less estrogen and progesterone, leading to various symptoms such as sleep disruptions, mood swings, and of course, hot flashes. These hot flashes are characterized by sudden bouts of sweating, flushing, and chills that can last for several minutes.
The approval of Veozah was based on comprehensive clinical trials involving more than 3,000 women in the US and Canada. These studies demonstrated that Veozah significantly reduced the frequency of hot flashes experienced by women compared to a placebo. Participants took the drug for a duration of one year, and the results were highly promising.
It's important to note that Veozah doesn't mean the end of other existing therapies. Dr. Stephanie Faubion, the director of the Mayo Clinic's Center for Women's Health, emphasized that having more options is always beneficial for women. She highlighted the importance of individualized treatment and mentioned that for many women, short-term hormone replacement therapy will continue to be the most effective and affordable choice for managing hot flashes.
Historically, hormone replacement therapy faced criticism in 2002 when a government-funded health study suggested an increased risk of cancer and blood clots. As a result, the use of these therapies dropped dramatically. However, subsequent studies have shown that for most healthy women under the age of 60 and within 10 years of their last menstrual period, the benefits of hormone therapy outweigh the risks. It's important to make informed decisions based on individual circumstances.
The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) evaluated the clinical evidence supporting Veozah and considered it a promising option, though inconclusive in providing a net benefit compared to no pharmacologic treatment. ICER concluded that the drug would be cost-effective for women who are unable to take hormone replacement therapy or choose not to take it if priced between $2,000 and $2,500 per year.
Astellas has announced the price of Veozah to be $550 per month before insurance coverage, which is approximately three times higher than the ICER benchmark.
As with any medication, Veozah does come with a warning regarding the risk of liver injuries. The FDA recommends that women considering this treatment undergo blood tests to ensure their liver is healthy and free of any damage or infection before starting the medication. Additionally, regular blood tests every three months for the first nine months of treatment are advised to monitor liver function.
In the clinical trials, some common side effects reported by participants included abdominal pain, diarrhea, insomnia, back pain, hot flushes, and elevated liver enzymes. It's important to be aware of these potential side effects and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
While Veozah represents an exciting advancement in menopausal medicine, it's crucial to understand that it may not be the ideal solution for everyone. The field of menopausal medicine is continually evolving, and we still have much to learn about this class of medication. Therefore, it's important to consider all available options and work closely with your healthcare provider to determine the most suitable treatment approach for your specific needs.
